“Great post!” is not a reply

A reply that could sit under any post adds nothing, so say something only you could say about this one.

“Great post!” “So true!” “This is gold.” You’ve seen a thousand of these under every big account. They’re the reply version of nodding along at a party while checking your phone, and the author can tell.

So can X. Its open-sourced code includes a rule that takes clusters of replies flagged for duplicate text and tags them with a label literally named COPYPASTA_SPAM. One “Great post!” probably won’t trip anything on its own, and the public code doesn’t reveal every threshold. But it shows what the system is built to catch: replies that could have been pasted under anything.

A good reply is a small contribution: a number from your own product, a counterexample, a sharp question or a one-line story. Do it under accounts bigger than you, where new people will read it, and under smaller ones, where a thoughtful reply really gets noticed. Aim for the reply the author actually wants to answer.
